The Florida Gutter Maintenance Checklist
Seven steps to find out what your gutters actually need — and avoid paying for the wrong fix. Print it or work through it on your phone.
Look up, from the ground
Check for visible debris sitting in the trough, sagging sections, or water staining on the fascia below the gutter line.
Watch it in the next hard rain
Does water sheet over the edge instead of draining through the downspout? That’s either a clog or a sizing problem.
Check the downspout outlets
Water should drain at least 3-5 feet from the foundation. Pooling right at the base means the extension is missing or clogged.
Note your canopy coverage
Heavy oak or pine overhead means 3 cleanings a year, not 2. Open lots can usually stretch to 2.
Check age and material
Original gutters on a home built before 2000 are past the point where "looks fine" means "works fine." Rust or pitting is a replacement signal, not a repair one.
Decide: clean, repair, or replace
Isolated debris = clean. One bad section on an otherwise sound system = repair. Multiple failures or an aging system = price a replacement.
Get a written price for the real fix
Cleaning, repair, installation or guards — in writing, before anyone gets on a ladder.
